Privacy Policy
Root & Row for iOS · Effective June 11, 2026
Root & Row is built by a gardener, for gardeners — not by a data company. The short version: your data stays on your device, we run no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no trackers, and we never sell data. The details follow.
Data stored on your device
Everything you create in Root & Row — gardens, plots, plant selections, planting plans, reminders, notes and settings (including your planting zone, frost dates and household size) — is stored locally on your iPhone. We have no servers that store your data and no way to read it. Deleting the app deletes this data.
Location you enter
To find your hardiness zone, you type a zip code or town name. The app converts it to coordinates using Apple's geocoding service, then uses those coordinates to look up climate and weather data from the services below. Your location is saved only on your device. The app never uses GPS and never tracks where you are.
Third-party services the app talks to
The app makes direct requests to a small number of services to do its job. We send the minimum needed and none of them receive your name or identity:
- Open-Meteo (weather & climate history) — receives the coordinates of the location you entered to fetch forecasts and frost estimates.
- phzmapi.org and a frost-date service — for US zip codes only, receives the zip code to look up the USDA zone and typical frost dates.
- AI features (Pro) — when you ask for growing advice, ask a custom question, use photo diagnosis or the plant identifier, your question and (only for the photo features) the photos you choose are sent through our relay server (Cloudflare Workers) to OpenRouter, which routes them to an AI model to generate the answer. We do not store your questions or photos; they are processed to produce the response and are subject to OpenRouter's privacy policy. Photos are only ever sent when you explicitly pick or take them for an AI feature.
Purchases
Root & Row Pro subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple through your App Store account. We never see your payment details. Manage or cancel anytime in your App Store subscription settings.
Photos and camera
The app asks for camera or photo-library access only when you use a photo feature, and can only access the specific photos you select. Photos are not uploaded anywhere except as described under AI features above, and are not stored by us.
Notifications
Reminders use local notifications scheduled on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Children
Root & Row is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated effective date.
